Irksome Grace & Empty Religion: Jonah & Amos

  • All Saints Community Centre 338 Church Street Palmerston North New Zealand (map)

Jonah the recalcitrant prophet found God’s grace most irksome when God shows His endless compassion to a cruel and undeserving race. But through this, the prophet himself becomes broken by God.

Amos was commissioned to prophesy to a people who had grown spiritually lethargic, complacent and without compassion. Religiosity and social injustice plagued the land. Amos’ scathing words still hit home today. Although both prophets are similar in some ways, they are as different as chalk and cheese. The two books contrasted make for a fascinating study.
