Reading John's Gospel through an Old Testament Lens

  • Cornerstone Christian School 91 Mihaere Drive Palmerston North, Manawatū-Whanganui Region, 4414 New Zealand (map)

By Elizabeth Rowe

The Gospel of John seems so simple and straight-forward – Jesus through the eyes of the disciple that He loved. But do we, as 21stC Western Christians appreciate the same Jesus that those early Jewish believers did? Do we appreciate:

  • What John meant when he called Jesus the Logos?

  • Why Zaccheus offered to pay back four times as much as he defrauded?

  • Why the High Priest tore his robe at Christ’s confession of divinity?

  • Why the soldier did not break Jesus’ legs on the cross?

The Bible is so much a Jewish book that is steeped in the Old Testament, and John is especially so. It is when we discover the roots of Christianity, that we appreciate the Bible as one continuous revelation of the mind of God to us.
